Much has also been written about the profound importance of postcolonial theory in relation to South African, and other African, theatre practices and traditions. This article aims to contribute to the growing knowledge of in-depth and nuanced insights gained from this legacy in the context of current, post-apartheid theatre. This article specifically argues that, in post-apartheid theatre, when the characters and/or audience, collectively experience grief, the traumatic legacy of the binary arrangement of identities (of ‘primitive/civilized, superior/inferior, master/servant’) constructed by and for power during the pre-revolution era, breaks down and the crimes of colonization and apartheid are perceived by the audience. This is seen as a necessary part of the process in the ongoing countering of the received master narrative inculcated by the colonial and apartheid periods. Agreeing with Ash Amin, the paper argues that through such theatre the periphery is liberated and, on those terms, engages with the centre, or historical, hegemonic narrative. From that perspective, history and the present can be grasped and new post-apartheid identities seen as multi-dimensional, non-stereotyped, and in ‘constant production’ are revealed. Applying this notion, one observes that multiple stories emerge to articulate this countering process. But, core to this process, is the subjective and collective experience of grief leading to the binaries collapsing and the crime of the colonial and apartheid project being seen at the core of the traumatic history which informs the contemporary, multi-layered South African experience. The article explores five contemporary South African plays: Bush Tale, Relativity; Township Stories, Hallelujah!, Reach, Armed Response. Notions of postcolonial and identity theory are incorporated in the article as they help illuminate the plays. In addition, insights gained from the Kleinian School of Object Relations psychoanalytic theory help inform notions of how the processes of grief and trauma deepen our understanding of the plays, and the contemporary South African narrative.Item A Brief Propensity Index for Conduct Disorder (BPI-CD): Development, Validity and Reliability(2020-04-14) Oguntayo, Rotimi; Olaseni, Abayomi, Oladele; Miracle, Kehinde; Helen, Osinowo; Isaac, Yakubu, IsaaConduct Disorder (CD) can pose serious concerns to parents, home and the society, meanwhile assessing this construct in clinical practice has been based on western concepts which limited the cultural factors implicated in CD. This study presents a reliable and valid screening tools for conduct disorder among juveniles and general population respectively. Existing scales that assessed deviant behavior or CD were reviewed. A qualitative study was conducted using juveniles and college students between the age 10 to 19; this is to determine salient constructs related to CD. Themes were generated, and those related to specific predictors of CD were used to generate a 17-item of Brief Propensity Index for Conduct Disorder (BPI-CD). A cross-sectional survey was then conducted among 125 juveniles and college students to assess the reliability and validity of the scale. The participants were purposively selected. Construct validity using exploratory factor analysis was factored and Varimax rotated the scale into six components (KMO = .685, df=171, p<.001). Convergent validity results showed a significant relationship between BPI-CD and Youth Deviant Behavior Variety Scale (r=.338, p<.01), while discriminant validity results revealed a non-significant relationship between (BPI-CD) and Social Skills Scale (r=.101, p>.05), thus showing a strong validity. The reliability dimensions and subscales have meritorious reliability (Aggression to People/Animals, α =.76, Serious Violation of rule and destruction of property, α =.73; Deceitfulness and theft, α =.68). The overall Cronbach’s Alpha was 0.86. BPI-CD is therefore recommended as reliable and valid screening tool for conduct disorder tendency.Item A Case Based Account Of Bantu Iav-Focus(2019-08-13) Selvanathan, NagaRight dislocation (Cheng & Downing 2012) and movement to a low FocP (van der Wal 2006) are competing analyses of Immediately-After-Verb (IAV) focus. In this paper, I discuss novel Lubukusu IAV focus data which shows that 1) IAV focus requires movement to a low FP and that 2) IAV focus is not a purely focus related phenomenon. Adopting Baker & Collins (2006) analysis of Linkers, I propose that movement to a low FP for focus interpretation is a strategy of case assignment to DPs within the VP. This analysis is shown to be superior to a purely right dislocation analysis as it can also better account for IAV focus asymmetries between Zulu and Lubukusu.Item A Case for Open Science Hardware(2019-02-13) Havemann, JohannaPresentation about Open Science Hardware held at the Berlin Open Science - Reproducible Research - Meetup on Feb 06, 2019.Item A Case for Providing Electricity Subsidies In Urban Informal Settlements(University of Nairobi, 2020-01) Ambole, Amollo; Njoroge, Peris; Anditi, Christer; Outa, GeorgeThis policy brief highlights research findings from a two-year project using Nairobi’s Mathare settlement as a case study. The research established that close to 93 per cent of the residents have access to electricity. However, 50 per cent of the connections are informal or illegal, meaning that they are not provided directly by the mandated electric power supply agency: the Kenya Power and Lighting Company, and are thus not metered.Item A Case Study of Multiple Sclerosis (MS)(2022-01-02) Mohamed, WaelThis is a CASE STUDY OF MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS (MS) is designed to be a PBL for teaching for Medical students.Item A characterization of minimal ascreen null hypersurfaces of $(LCS)$-space forms(2019-02-25) Ssekajja, SamuelIn the present paper, we study non totally geodesic minimal ascreen null hypersurface, M, of a Lorentzian concircular structure (LCS)-space form of constant curvature 0 or 1. We prove that; if the Ricci tensor of M is parallel with respect to any leaf of its screen distribution, then M is isometric to a product of a null curve and spheres.Item A Child with Fits: A Case Report for PBL(2021-12-29) Mohamed, WaelThis is a case report for a child with seizures. It is presented as a PBL for teaching purposes in Medical School for Undergraduate Medical StudentsItem A Closer Look At The Akan Determiner Bi: An Epistemic Indefinite Analysis(2019-10-28) Owusu, Augustina PokuaThis study aims to shed light on the epistemic indefinite interpretation (EI) of the Akan (Asante Twi) determiner bi which hitherto had not been discussed in the Akan literature. In previous studies, Amfo (2010) and Arkoh (2011) review its referential or specific indefinite interpretation. The current study shows that in addition to the above interpretation when bi is used, the speaker signals that she does not have access to all the information about who or what satisfies the existential claim they are making. I employ Aloni (2001) and Aloni & Port’s (2015) theory of conceptual covers and methods of identification to determine “knowledge” of a referent in a particular context. Conceptual covers are sets of individual concepts which exclusively and exhaustively covers the domain of individuals (Aloni 2001). I show that the epistemic indefinite analysis and the specificity or referential analysis are compatible. When bi is used, the speaker asserts she can name a noteworthy or identifying property about the referent of the NP, which is the referential or specificity interpretation. Additionally, she presupposes that she is ignorant about further characterizing information about the referent, the epistemic indefinite interpretation.Item A comparative analysis of strengths and weaknesses of corporate governance practices between two jurisdictions; UK and South Africa(2021-05-28) Costa, King; Ngcetane-Vika, ThelelaThis paper is an exploration of theoretical aspects underpinning the practice of Corporate Governance (CG) in the United Kingdom and South Africa. Because of several corporate scandals and failures in the twenty and twenty first siècles, Corporate Governance has been a significant and crucial subject and field of study in business schools in recent years. Leadership and Management of business entities and alignment to prescripts that are statutory formulated for prevention of corporate decline and enhancement of sound business principles continue to be highly contentious issues. A theoretical and exploratory narrative synthesis was conducted to unearth the strengths and weaknesses of contextual explication, practice and legal application of Corporate Governance in both the United Kingdom and South Africa. In terms of the UK, the study found out that the CG is designed and benchmarked on international best practice, seamlessly fitting within all the Codes on Key Aspects of Corporate Governance. Secondly, another major element of strengths determination were found to be inherent in the practice of voluntary compliance. However, the greatest criticisms of Corporate Governance theories in the UK was the fact that their focus is largely on public corporations, especially those listed in London stock exchange and thus, leave behind small and medium enterprises. The cultural diversity is also found to be a cause for concern in terms of practice and legal application. On the other hand, in South Africa, the study found out that consideration for diversity is one of the greatest strengths in CG practice and legal application, which is likely to contribute effectively to good and sound decision-making, reflective of all people. Weaknesses continue to be the delay in realisation of board equity in terms of gender while on the other hand, corruption and lack of adherence to retributive prescripts remain problematic.Item A Consequential Approach to Incorporating Spiritual Intelligence in the Workplace.(2021-11-17) Moleka, Pitshou, BasikabioUnderstanding the connection between spirituality and the workplace can be done in two ways. In this piece, I examine some of the benefits of adding spiritual intelligence into the workplace, including job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and corporate citizenship behaviors. The more organizations that embrace spirituality, both collectively and individually, the more benefits they will enjoy.Item A Corpus Study Of The Swahili Demonstrative Position(2018-05-23) Mwamzandi, MohamedSynchronic studies on Swahili adnominal demonstratives have not addressed the interplay between syntactic position and pragmatic function of these structures. This study shows how referential givenness of discourse entities may explain Swahili word order variation in Swahili adnominal demonstratives. Class 1 (animate nouns) demonstratives are examined in the two attested word orders: NP+DEM and DEM+NP. A close analysis of dataset extracted from the Helsinki Corpus of Swahili reveals that the two structures have distinct pragmatic values. The NP+DEM order is used for active topics while the DEM+NP order reactivates semiactive/inactive topics. This study reveals how the syntax-pragmatics interplay may explain distinct structures viewed as semantic equivalents by native speakers.Item A Diachronic Analysis Of The Socio-Semantic Features Of Igbo Personal Names(2021-10-19) Oweleke, Esther NwakaegoThis paper examines Igbo personal names from the perspectives of anthropological linguistics, socio-semantics, pragmatics and diachrony. It traces the evolution of name-giving within three major eras, pre-Christian (before the 1850s), early-Christian (from 1857--1960s) and Pentecostal (1960s to date) among the Igbo. The data for the study are 300 personal names sourced through interviews with both old and young members of the Igbuzo-Igbo community as well as from class registers of some nursery, primary and secondary schools in Port Harcourt. This paper reveals three interesting and important findings. First, indigenous Igbo names are culturally, semantically and pragmatically significant. Second, the principles and practice of name-giving have undergone some drastic changes through the eras. During the early-Christian and Pentecostal eras, the forces of Christianity, modernization and globalization have resulted in new names that reflect these changes. Third, indigenous names which belong to the core vocabulary of the language are seriously endangered. The paper concludes that if the indigenous names that are replete with meaning, and portray the values, identity and the beauty of the Igbo culture are allowed to die through lack of intergenerational transmission, then this aspect of the language and culture will also die.Item A Dictionary And Grammatical Outline Of Chakali(2017-03-01) Brindle, JonathanThis book is the first comprehensive monograph dedicated to Chakali, a Southwestern Grusi language spoken by less than 3500 people in northwest Ghana.
