The archaeological and archaeometric study of the African amphorae from the Gerbal cove in Port-Vendres, as a complement to published material from excavations carried out in 1964-65 and 1973-74, has enabled us to follow the development of an anchorage dump between the 2nd and 7th centuries. It has also brought to light a new type of amphora from the early 5th century, possibly from the western provinces of Roman Africa, and put forward the theory of an additional African cargo alongside the predominantly Hispanic cargo of the Port-Vendres 1 wreck, from around 400 AD
