KEY PLAYERS IN CROSS-BORDER TRADE IN DAKOLA, BURKINA FASO
Abstract
In West Africa, border areas such as Dakola play a key role in territorial development. This study looks at the main players and their roles in cross-border trade in Dakola. The research is based on a mixed methodology, combining field research and interviews with various stakeholders, in order to provide an overall view of the players involved in cross-border trade in this locality of Burkina Faso. It highlights the importance of state and non-state actors in this economic dynamic. State actors, in particular customs, the national police and the national gendarmerie, play a crucial role in the regulation and security of trade. At the same time, non-state actors, mainly informal traders, are essential to this trade. Transporters ensure the mobility of goods and people, facilitating trade between Burkina Faso and Ghana, while foreign exchange dealers play a key role in monetary transactions. The spatial structure of Dakola, with a concentration of activities along the RN5, optimises interaction between the various players.
