Description:
This presentation explores how preprints and open scholarship make it easier for African researchers to share their work, connect with others, and increase their visibility. It also highlights how AfricArxiv supports open, inclusive, and collaborative research across the continent. Beginning with a brief look at the evolution of preprints, from their early use in physics to their growing adoption across disciplines, the talk discusses their benefits, including faster dissemination, increased citations, and stronger collaboration opportunities. It also addresses common concerns such as credibility, plagiarism, and recognition, showing how solutions like DOIs, open peer review, and community curation help ensure trust and credit for authors. Through the lens of an early-career professional, the presentation reflects on Africa’s growing participation in open scholarship, the remaining gaps in infrastructure and awareness, and the practical steps forward. It calls for collective action to make African research more discoverable, inclusive, and impactful, one preprint at a time.
