The site is called Ibali (isiXhosa for 'story') and it runs on a set of semantic web technologies called Omeka S and IIIF. Ibali is part of the Libraries' drive to nurture an Open Access space where digital collections can be created, curated, published and showcased. It is a highly collaborative and flexible, future-thinking online repository space. Since its launch a number of diverse collections have already been showcased on Ibali - including a library of open access resources focusing on climate change, transcriptions of the early South African Black Press, and an archive on an active theatrical research project. This presentation offers a walkthrough of some of the metadata infrastructure that we have set up to ensure discoverability and interoperability, especially with regards to showcasing collections from the Global South. The use and institutional implementation of several add-on modules will be showcased to highlight how schemas and ontologies are used to provide integration between indigenous data and the semantic web.Item Advocacy and Capacity Building in Open Access (OA) and Open Science (OS) to top management staff in African Higher Education Institutions, in Egypt(2022-11-01) El-Shari, Amany; Bahei-El-Din, Yehia; Corletey, Abednego; Persic, Ana; Anand, Roheena; Wanyenze, Rhoda; El-Hefnawy, Aly; Mchunu, Nokuthula P.; Rafols, Ismael; Owango, JoyThis was the second of a series of workshops on Advocacy and Capacity Building in Open Access & Open Science to top management staff in African Higher Education Institutions by the AAU and supporting partners PLOS and TCC Africa. The 17 goals and 169 targets of the SDGs were developed to succeed the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which ended in 2015 UNESCO (2021) At least 10 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) comprising the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development require constant scientific research. Scientific research knowledge has to share with respective research stakeholders. Open-access repositories facilitate access to scientific research (Sweileh,2020). Based on this fact, this study would like to examine the contribution of Botswana universities' repositories in promoting SDGs research practices to the scientific community and citizen scientists. The study will apply a descriptive bibliometric analysis by reviewing research publications on SDG from 2015 to 2022 from three Botswana universities' institutional repository collections. The bibliometric analysis will be conducted in three steps. The information will be searched and retrieved from three universities' institutional repositories ( University of Botswana, Botho University and Botswana International University of Science and Technology. The data will be retrieved by searching ("SUSTAIN ABLE DEVELOPMENT GOAL*" or "SDG*") in the field "TITLE" or Abstract.Item Breaking Down Silos Across Infrastructures To Improve The Visibility Of African Research Outputs(2023-06-14) Oaiya, OmoThis presentation was delivered at Open Repositories 2023 Conference as part of Panel 7: LIBSENSE Africa - Breaking down silos across infrastructures to improve the visibility of African research outputs.Item Breaking the Wall of Indigenous and Scientific Knowledge(2020-10-01) Obanda, JohanssenOver centuries, indigenous communities have managed to withstand epidemics, climate crises and ecosystem erosions and live on their territories sustainably by closely observing and managing well the limited natural resources they depend on. These proven indigenous knowledge systems have been - and continue to be - facing suppression, belittling and exploitation throughout and after colonialism. In my community today around Lake Victoria, indigenous knowledge suffers isolation and extinction as the continent experiences technological advancements for the price of ecosystem destruction. Furthermore, building synergies between indigenous knowledge and modern science is still a challenge. The Turkana, Maasai, Samburu and other indigenous groups in Kenya rely on their community knowledge acquired and accumulated over centuries, covering indigenous concepts about astronomy, physics, medicine, botany, zoology, psychiatry, and non-invasive technology. However, their rich knowledge base is being faced by extinction as the older generations are losing more and more opportunities of passing their knowledge on. Most indigenous languages are only spoken, hence knowledge capture is difficult. I want to build a bridge between indigenous and academic knowledge systems. This will be achieved through a series of events to facilitate meetings between indigenous community representatives and local researchers to explore opportunities for collaboration utilizing the infrastructure and network created through my work with Pint of Science Kenya. The event series will have its peak with a sustainable science communication festival under the theme of “Nature for Life, Life for Nature” showcasing indigenous music, science and art and presenting the initiated collaborative activities and research projects while ensuring protection from misappropriation. The process will be paralleled by the fostering of equitable engagement of both indigenous knowledge holders and scholarly scientists through communication and collaboration, aided by documentation and archiving in audio/visual files of interviews, video footage and scholarly documentation as with books, manuscripts and journal articles in the pan-African repository AfricArXiv. Modern Science and Indigenous Science can not only co-exist but instead complement each other to allow us to tackle continental and global challenges like climate change, the pandemic, forced migration and poverty. I believe that Indigenous Knowledge deserves an equal position alongside mainstream academic science. I am convinced that the global research community benefits from a balanced exchange of knowledge and experience from all parts of the world, especially as we address global challenges.Item Bulk Hydrogen Analysis of Cyanogenic Food Plants Using Neutrons for Routine Quality Control(2023-12-14) Garba, Keziah; Jonah, Sunday; Onyike, ElewechiMillions face food safety threats, with 70% of rural African staples like cocoyam and sorghum harbouring toxic cyanogenic glycosides. To ensure safe consumption, we employed neutron reflection, a rapid, sustainable technique, to assess hydrogen content, which inversely correlates with cyanide levels. This non-destructive approach proved effective, paving the way for routine food quality control and improved public health through the innovative application of particle radiation technology.Item DataCite - Contributing to PIDs Infrastructure in Africa(2023-12-01) Obileye, OlatunbosunThe presentation was made during AfricArxiv webinar series. It contains six genes which encodes six major structural proteins arranged in the sequence order of 3’-NP-P-M-F-HN-L-5’. NDV selectively replicate and kills many different human cancer cells, however, it has been found to persistently infect a subset of bladder cancer cells that resist NDV-mediated oncolysis. Analysis of NDV genome (NDVpi) that persistently infecting the cancer cells revealed deletion and insertion regions in NP and M protein of the virus. In addition, genome truncations were observed at HN and L proteins regions. Thus, changes in nucleotide sequences of the viral genome may have significance impact on the development of persistence infection in bladder cancer cells. However, it is not clear how this mutational changes occurred to bring about persistence infection in bladder cancer cells.Item East African Social Sciences and Humanities Publishing: A Handmade Bibliometrics Approach(2016-10-20) Schmidt, NoraSlides for the presentation at the 21st International Conference on Science and Technology Indicators, València (Spain), September 14-16, 2016. Abstract of the paper to be published in the proceedings: For Eastern Africa, very little information about the SSH knowledge production can be found from a European perspective. Adequate indicators like information-rich bibliographic databases that cover journals and book publishers based in East Africa are lacking. This research in progress explores their indexing situation in detail, their development, which is closely connected to political history, their (non-)usage, and affiliations as well as career-stages of their authors. Furthermore, it also pays attention to SSH researchers based in East Africa who use other publication venues. Any bibliometric analysis in this field needs to rely on manual data collection, otherwise it would be heavily biased. This study lays out the foundation for citation analyses, qualitative research on the publications' content and the self-description of East African scholars against the background of an academic environment that is often described as “international”.Item Enabling Global Reach And Discoverability Of African Research Data(2024-03-07) Cotera, Maria; Hahnel, MarkEnabling global reach and discoverability of African research data - AfricArXiv Open Science Webinar Series 2024Item Enhancing African Research Visibility Through Use of Repositories(2021-02-03) Obanda, Johanssen; Havemann, JoA presentation about how to Enhance African Research Visibility Through Use of Repositories; held at the TCC Africa webinar on Feb 3, 2021Item Experiences in Open Research & Education for Sustainable Development in Africa(2019-12-18) Abukutsa-Onyango, MaryPresentation of my research to promote Sustainable Production and Utilization of African Indigenous Vegetables (AIVs) for Nutrition Security and Poverty Reduction in Kenya (Africa).
